Meet your guide

Kristel Vereecken: Founder Ghent-Authentic : Dutch/English

After working as a lawyer for over 12 years, I took a sabbatical which would change my life forever. I decided to follow my passions in life which are traveling, writing, speaking and creating new ways of thinking on for instance tour guiding, tourism and travel. In the fall of 2010 I set up my own tour guiding business 'Ghent-Authentic' in my hometown Ghent for those who want to discover Ghent in a more personal and above anything inspiring way.

Besides that, I live to travel. The movement which goes along with intuitive solo travelling is an addictive abundant source of insights and creativity. The same goes for the to me very inspiring places as New York City and Oxford (UK) where I retreat myself a couple of weeks/months a year. They bring out the best in me :)

In 2017 I gave my first TED Talk 'A square meter of soul' at TedxGhent, which has been translated in several languages.

I keep on improving my guiding skills and have a strong passion for the Ghent Altarpiece which became along the way my expertise and inspiration. In 2019 I plan a series of inspiring talks about the Ghent Altarpiece of Van Eyck in Belgium as well as abroad.

Vicky Daenen : Dutch/English

Besides working as a meteorologist I'm passionate about Ghent. Together with my husband and two little boys I live on the countryside around Ghent, close to the Lyss river which I love. Questions about the weather during your visit? Ask me!

Véronique Delariviere : Dutch/English/German

As a management assistant, I deal on a daily basis with people from all over the world. Apart from my love for Ghent, I have a soft spot in my heart for London.

Cathy Verschoore : Dutch/English

When I'm not hiking in remote places or training for a triathlon, I'm working as a sports counselor for the city of Ghent. On top of that I love to take visitors from all over the world around in 'my' city and let them feel the heartbeat of Ghent!

Marijke Mortier : Dutch/English

Although my professional carreer as a historian lies behind me, history keeps on inspiring me. Not so much the facts and figures of days long time gone, but how history affects the way we live today and defines our culture. How much I love to travel together with my husband all over the world, I gladly come home to give my cute little granddaughter a big hug :)

When I'm not teaching French, I love to tour guide in French as well as in Dutch and Spanish ! The beauty of Ghent keeps on inspiring me. I love to share my passion with people from all over the world. It brings a smile on my face when I see and feel their amazement and awe for Ghent :)

Joachim Van der Fraenen : Dutch

Despite my busy professional carreer as a youth counselor, I keep on making the time to guide and share my passion for Ghent. Seeing people excited, happy and inspired is what drives me :)

Kathleen Sempels : Dutch/English

After years living abroad, I touche based again in Ghent. More than that, I am proud to have finished the Ghent guiding programme last year and to share my passion and knowledge about it with you. I'm fond of contemporary architecture, art and hotspots; luckily we have plenty of those ones in Ghent !

Valerie Dewitte : Dutch/English/Italian

Born and raised in the antiqueshop of my father in Ghent, I was destined to love art, history, literature, travel, beautiful fabrics, craftsmanship you name it. I love it all :) Above that I have a soft spot in my heart for Italy. Not only do I speak it fluently, but I'm also a writer for the Italian magazine 'Buonissimo'. I love to guide the Ghent Altarpiece as well as the contemporary architecture of the Krook, as I said, I love it all :)

Michel Saey : Dutch/French

Once a doctor always a doctor ! That definitely goes for me albeit the last years mostly as a Ghent-Authentic guide :) People say I'm caring, passionate and friendly which makes me humble and grateful. I love to share my love for the city where I'm lucky to have lived the last decade. Beside the city tours, I'm also a trained museum guide. The Guislain museum is my favourite!

Victoria Demaertelaere : Dutch/English/German

Trained as an English/German major, I love languages, literature and clubbing in Berlin :) As a guide in Ghent, I enjoy the interaction with our clients from all over the world. Feeling how they open up to me, how they become aware of the beauty of the city truly makes me happy :)

Doreen Buysse : Dutch

Born and raised in Ghent, I'm an authentic, proud Ghentian. I care about my city and I care about people. What better way is there to show that than throughout tourguiding in the city I know so well? However, there's always more to discover as Ghent keeps on changing and reinventing itself. In my spare time I'm a detective or is it the other way around? O yes, I'm a trained chef as well so you can't go wrong with me if you love food :)

Eugène Vanherreweghe : Dutch/English/Italian

I recently became a licensed city guide in Ghent. Before that I guided on the countryside or in nature. I love cities as well as nature and that shows throughout my tour guiding. What I really like about the Ghent Altarpiece ? The flowers and plants on it. Did you know that Van Eyck painted 75 different flowers and plants on the Altarpiece ? When you don't find me in the city, you find me guiding our brand new Latem tour on the splendid countryside around Ghent.

Joy Van Mele : Dutch/English/French/German/Spanish

As an executive assistant of Kristel, I'm the youngest of the bunch. If you contact Ghent-Authentic I will probably the first one you talk to. I help to cocreate and organize the tours and basically make sure everyone is happy :) When not in Ghent I love to travel to nature and peaceful places together with my boyfriend :)

Denise Hendrickx : French/English

Born and raised in Ghent, Ghent still manages to amaze me even after all these years. I love to see the surprise on my clients' faces as they enter the city for the very first time and are stunned by its beauty. When not in the city I love to travel all over the world.
