Kristel -- our day trip to Ghent was a smashing success. We cannot thank you enough, it went perfectly.
Paul was an amazing host. He was so much more than a tour guide, so I will call him our host.
We met in the square across the way from Boon, where he was explaining how the lamp posts are connected to the maternity wards and when a new baby is born, some parents push a button and the lanterns light up. As we walked away, sure enough, the lights went off. My girlfriend, Kristin, screamed in delight and her son Samuel got a picture of this.
I felt as if it was a setup, but Paul said it was the first time that ever happened for him on one of these tours.
I knew from there it would be a special time. His knowledge of Belgian history and these spots in Ghent were so perfect, and he understood all along that the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb was our real calling to come to this beautiful country.
We ended the tour inside the cathedral and he spent about 30 minutes telling us all the history of the altarpiece, more than we eventually learned during the virtual reality tour.
After we parted ways, he even went to the Belfry to find out what the last admission was there so that we could get to the top of the tower there after the cathedral.
But we never went into the Belfry, because Paul also gave us another insider tip. He said that we were going to see the altarpiece so late in the afternoon, as it closes up, that we should just stay right there and we would get to see the left and right wings close up.
So we stayed right there and watched the beautiful thing, seeing the other view of the altarpiece.
We couldn't have been happier, it was a perfect ending. Until we realized that we had another 40 minutes until our dinner reservation, and we decided to go to the Cobbler inside the hotel right on the river, which is where Paul had said was a great place for cocktail drinks.
It was spectacular.
I don't know how to say thank you enough for this trip, and please make sure to thank Paul.

Wat: Tijdens het Festival van de architectuur hebben we de Krook voor ons alleen. In kleine groepjes nemen de Ghent-Authentic gidsen u mee voor en achter de schermen van de Krook.
I’m happy to share the result of my TEDxjourney, which ended (or begun, depending how you look upon it) on May 20th 2017 on the Tedx stage in Ghent and is now available online:
